Now before I start I wanna say that I am no electrical engineer or RF engineer, so someone who is can maybe tell me what is going on here. I am lucky enough to have a nice new iPhone 4... I am very happy with it, but I have seen a lot of chatter on the net and even on TV now about it's apparent signal loss when you hold it in a certain way. I'm still not sure at this point if it's a real problem or not. All phones seem to do the same thing to some degree and Apple does not seem to be doing anything about it - people are baying for blood! So, I've had a look for myself and here's what I've discovered: First, for those who don't know, let me explain what is going on. When you look at sides of the iPhone 4, you'll see three breaks in the steel band that goes around the phone, one at the top and two at the bottom. However, the one on the bottom right [looking at the front of the iPhone 4] is not a break, it's just a line to make things look even for design purposes. The other two breaks are there to split up the two radio antennas built into the chassis of the phone. Very clever... ...or is it? To see "the problem" for yourself, first switch off your WiFi [you don't need it for this] and cup the iPhone 4 in your left hand, like you would if you were holding it to make a call. You should see the signal bars start to drop after a few seconds and eventually you might loose the signal all together! Just like a lot of others [maybe you too], I've been able to see the bars drop too and even measure the signal drop with the "Speed Test.app" [Free from the App store] when I cover the break on the bottom left side of the iPhone 4! Online opinion suggests that this is because your skin is conductive and by placing it over the break you are changing the length of the radio antenna thereby causing a short. But - and here it comes, if I put my finger over the break at the top of the phone instead, nothing changes? Surely, this also shorts out the antennas, just the other way around, right? So why does it not visibly loose bars? Weird! As a side note, I've done a lot of testing of this "problem" and sometimes I am unable to make the bars drop down by doing the above? I have also seen the bars drop on their own when I'm not even touching the phone! Also, if you leave the WiFi on, sometimes when you cover the break at the top, you can see your WiFi signal drop instead! Let me know what you think...
